Who We Are
The Michigan State University Finance Association is a student-led organization driven to provide resources for students interested in finance. Our objective is to facilitate the admittance of MSU students into the finance industry via education, preparation, and by developing a robust professional network.​

Corporate FinanceCorporate finance professionals make key financial decisions for businesses, focusing on resource allocation and communication with stockholders. This month will cover their roles and the importance of corporate finance in a company. We will also delve into the significance of corporate finance in driving a company’s growth and profitability, as well as the skills required to succeed in this field.

Investment BankingThis month, we will dive into the daily responsibilities of investment bankers, explore various exit opportunities, and provide an in-depth look at the recruiting process. Additionally, we’ll discuss effective preparation strategies for those looking to break into the industry and succeed in their investment banking careers.

Private Equity/Venture CapitalThis month will cover the key aspects of private equity and venture capital. We will also explore resources and skills beneficial for success in these fields. The private equity industry focuses on investing in private companies by acquiring them with leverage and enhancing their value before selling. In contrast, venture capitalists invest in startups, providing funding and guidance while aiming for exits through buyouts or IPOs.

Wealth ManagementWealth management professionals offer comprehensive advice and investment services to meet the diverse needs of individuals and high-net-worth investors. This field encompasses financial advising, accounting, legal planning, and often insurance services, focusing on clients' overall lifestyles. This month will cover the key components of wealth management, career paths, and the structure of firms specializing in this area.

Sales & Trading/Equity ResearchSales and trading focus on fixed-income, equity, currency, and commodity markets, with sales professionals distributing securities and traders managing risk. Proprietary trading involves making decisions for personal gain, while agency trading executes client orders. Equity research analysts evaluate public companies for investment recommendations and assess performance using financial modeling. This month will cover sales and trading roles, the differences between proprietary and agency trading, and the functions of buy-side and sell-side equity research analysts.

ConsultingConsulting is a career focused on providing expert advice to businesses to help them solve problems and achieve financial stability. We’ll explore how consultants analyze business operations, industry practices, and market trends to offer tailored solutions across all areas of a company. The month will also examine the different types of consulting firms, from global organizations to specialized boutiques, and how they enhance a company’s competitiveness, efficiency, and profitability.
